Jin Nong (金农, 1687-1764) was a scholar, poet, calligrapher, seal carver, and painter during the Qing dynasty. He was born in Renhe, which is present-day Hangzhou, Zhejiang province. During his youth, he studied under the renowned scholar and calligrapher Qian Zhuo.
At the age of 50, local officials recommended him to take a special Hanlin Academy Exam, reserved for those considered exceptionally learned. However, he did not succeed in the exam. Disappointed and frustrated, he embarked on extensive travels throughout the country. He eventually settled in Yangzhou, where he earned a living by selling his calligraphy and paintings. Jin Nong, widowed and childless, passed away in a temple in Yangzhou.
He was a man of profound learning and excelled in poetry, seal carving, and calligraphy. He is particularly known for creating a unique Flat Brush script (漆书). In painting, his specialty was classical-style plum blossoms, and he was also quite skilled in figures and landscape painting. Despite beginning his painting career at the age of 53, his distinctive style and strong character earned him a place among the Eight Eccentrics of Yangzhou.
