Xia Gui (夏圭, fl. 1195–1224), courtesy name Yuyu (禹玉), a native of Qiantang (present-day Hangzhou), Zhejiang province, was a celebrated landscapist of the Southern Song dynasty. He is considered one of the Four Great Masters of the Southern Song dynasty, alongside Li Tang, Liu Songnian, and Ma Yuan. Serving as Painter-in-Attendance at the court during the Nizong emperor's reign, he was honored with a golden belt by the emperor in recognition of his exceptional talent in painting.
Composition-wise, instead of portraying a panoramic view of the scenery, he framed the scenery more simply, often placing the painting's subject in a lower corner, leaving the rest of the space unadorned.
