Qing dynasty (1644-1911)

Pu Ru (溥儒, 1896–1963), also known by his courtesy name Xinyu and art name Hermit of the Western Hills (西山逸士), was a descendant of the Qing imperial family and a master of traditional Chinese painting and calligraphy. A grandson of Prince Gong, he received a classical education and later earned a Ph.D. in astronomy from the University of Berlin. After the fall of the Qing dynasty in 1911, he withdrew to Beijing's Western Hills, adopting the name Old Princeling (旧王孙). Pu's art blended the precision of Song and Yuan court painting with the refined spontaneity of literati aesthetics. He excelled in landscapes, figure painting, and calligraphy, drawing inspiration from Tang master Liu Gongquan. Often paired with the famous artist, Zhang Daqian as "South Zhang, North Pu" (南张北溥), Pu Ru moved to Taiwan in 1949, where he taught at National Taiwan Normal University.
