Gu Hongzhong

Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms

Gu Hongzhong (顾闳中 in Chinese, 910–980), a native of Jiangnan, was a renowned figure painter during the Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms. 


He served as an official at the Southern Tang Painting Academy and was known for his robust brushstrokes, and employing rich and vibrant colors. Proficient in capturing the expressions and emotions of figures, he stood alongside Zhou Wenju as a prominent artist. 


His only surviving masterpiece, recognized as one of China's ten great traditional paintings, is the "Night Revels of Han Xizai."
