Lan Ying
1585-1664
Ming Dynasty

Lan Ying (蓝瑛 in Chinese, 1585 - vers 1666 ), a prominent professional painter of the Ming Dynasty, was born in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province. He is renowned for landscape painting and is also skilled in depicting figures, flower-and-bird, as well as orchids and bamboo. He is the founder of WuLin school.

Lan Ying's painting style evolved through three distinct periods: In the first period, he emulated the brushstrokes of renowned Song Dynasty masters, particularly those of the Yuan Four Masters. During this time, his brushwork was fine and delicate, clearly reflecting the influence of certain schools of painting. While between 50 and 65 years, he began to innovate upon the techniques of his predecessors, gradually embarking on the path towards developing his own unique style. In his later years, he pioneered a majestic and solemn aesthetic, often depicting moss-covered scenes and autumn landscapes.
