Ming Dynasty

Lin Liang (林良in Chinese, vers 1436—1487) was born in Guangzhou Province. In his youth, Lin Liang served in local government before entering the imperial court through recommendation of his excellent painting skills.

His bird-and-flower paintings are in two distinct styles: the meticulous Gongbi style and the monochrome ink idea-sketch style. Influenced significantly by Bian Jingzhao, Lin Liang's meticulous Gongbi style radiates delicacy and elegance. He stands as a representative figure of Ming court flower-and-bird painting;

As a pioneer in monochrome ink idea-sketch painting of the Ming Dynasty, Lin Liang's works are characterized by bold, unrestricted brushstrokes, evoking a sense of transcendent charm reminiscent of wild woodlands and meandering streams.
